Point Loma: The Peninsula on the Bay With a Completely Different Vibe

Point Loma is the sophisticated side of the peninsula on the bay, watching the downtown skyline across the water while Ocean Beach keeps its laid-back energy on the west. This guide covers the four business districts, the food and music scene, the schools, the commuting realities, and what each neighborhood from La Playa to Liberty Station actually costs and feels like.

The San Diego skyline across the bay at sunset, the view Point Loma is known for

Point Loma sits on the east side of the peninsula, with Ocean Beach on the west, and it has a completely different vibe from one side to the other. Point Loma is the sophisticated side, watching the downtown skyline across the bay, while OB keeps its laid-back beach energy. It's amazing how much this small peninsula packs in.

Four business districts, all different

The Village of Point Loma is the walkable heart along Rosecrans, with shops and restaurants huddled together. Liberty Station was San Diego's Naval Training Center from 1923 to 1997 and is now a mixed-use hub of dining, shopping, the arts, and park space along the water. Shelter Island offers water access, hotels, restaurants, and yacht facilities. And the Midway District carries the big-box stores and the arena. On the bay side you'll also find one marina, two yacht clubs, and several sport-fishing businesses.

Food and music worth the trip

For casual seafood and fish tacos, Mitch's is my pick. For upscale dining, Valley High delivers. And for variety, Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station has endless pop-up food stands. Catch a show at Humphrey's by the Bay, a small amphitheater on the water where you can even paddle up and watch from a kayak for free.

A quick word on commuting

Point Loma is mostly hilly, and residential areas sit a bit of a hike from the commercial districts, which the temperate weather makes pleasant. The honest caveat is Rosecrans: it's the main road in and out, and it can get congested during rush hour. Know your timing if you commute.

Schools

The elementary schools run Cabrillo, Dewey, Loma, Portal, Silvergate, and Sunset View, feeding into Dana Middle, Correia Junior High, and Point Loma High. Private Rock Academy and charter High Tech High round things out, and Point Loma Nazarene University sits in one of the most beautiful spots on the peninsula, with a breathtaking west-facing ocean view.

The neighborhoods, quickly

The Wooded Area

Lush, tree-lined streets with large lots and historic mansions, a tranquil semi-rural feel. Homes here are surprisingly compact, around 1,500 sq ft, with a median price near $1.62 million.

La Playa

Picturesque waterfront charm, from quaint beach cottages to luxurious bayfront estates, with views of the bay, the skyline, and passing sailboats. Condos start around $1.1 million and waterfront estates can reach the double-digit millions.

Fleet Ridge

Sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific, the bay, and the skyline, with mostly single-story ranches averaging over 2,000 sq ft, selling in the low-to-mid $2 million range.

Roseville

The oldest settled part of the peninsula, steeped in maritime history and its Portuguese fishing heritage. Smaller, more affordable homes under 1,300 sq ft, with a median around $1.36 million.

Loma Portal

Craftsman bungalows, Spanish homes, and mid-century design with wide, tree-lined streets, averaging around 2,000 sq ft with a median near $1.02 million. The trade-off is plane noise, it's one of the louder neighborhoods near the airport.

Liberty Station

The redeveloped 361 acres of the old Naval Training Center, now a walkable community of townhomes and houses with everything in easy reach, yoga on the promenade, kayaking in the channel, and coffee from Bird Rock.

Midway District

Mostly commercial with residential pockets, condos around $625,000, plus the arena, big-box stores, and easy freeway access.

That's a wrap on Point Loma, the peninsula on the bay with so much to offer and so centrally located. If you're considering a move here, reach out anytime, no pressure and no obligation, and let's find your perfect place.
